We Solve the Sex Offender Problem

Human Hamster Ball

Society has been struggling with finding a way to protect itself from known sex offenders. Laws have been inacted nation-wide requiring registration of sex offenders and notification to residents when one moves into the neighborhood. But some studies have shown that these laws are not effective. Further, the harsh sanctions leveled upon sex offenders who make even the slightest error or omission in registering almost makes you pitty the poor souls ... almost. Luckily, we aren’t all slap stick here at Bitter Lawyer. We also contribute to society. And we have come up with a solution to this problem.

After watching a rerun of American Gladiators, we came up with a new proposal for dealing with sex offenders: let’s put them in hamster balls.

We can’t afford to keep sex offenders locked up forever, but we need to keep our children safe. We make them register their addresses, but this isn’t effective at preventing recidivism. They are still among us. As one public safety advocate put it, “hide your kids, hide your wife, and hide your husbands ‘cause they rapin’ e’rybody out here.”

Many are calling the idea “pure genius.” Now we can rest assured that a registered sex offender can’t bother us because he’s separated from the world by a quarter inch of transparent plastic. We have reached out to the community most impacted by sex offenders: schools. “We could even set up barriers at schools that would prevent the hamster balls from going through,” said one local school administrator who was thrilled by the idea.

Even the sex offenders could get on board with this. They could become a part of the community again. People won’t be as worried about having them around when they know there’s no way that their kids will be in danger.

It could really work out for everyone. Picture a playground with your children enjoying the equipment without fear of abduction. You look off into the distance and see a few hamster balls continually running into the sex offender barrier and bouncing off. Just past them the sun sets below the horizon, preparing to rise the next day over a new and safer community.

Red signs in Bradford County mark homes of sexual predators

BRADFORD COUNTY - The Bradford County Sheriff's Office is turning heads with the signs they are putting up to warn their community about sexual predators. The Sheriff's Office is putting large red and white signs up at the homes of convicted sexual predators.

"I prefer not to do this, people just need to leave people alone," one Bradford County neighbor told Channel 4. "That right there puts it out there for perspective, for people to make their own assumptions. If you assume, that's never good."

Sheriff Gordon Smith told Channel 4 over the phone Tuesday night that he felt compelled to put signs up after a mother complained to him last year that she didn't know a predator was living in her neighborhood.

Bradford County Sheriff's Captain Brad Smith spoke with Channel 4 on camera Tuesday, saying the Sherriff's efforts have good intentions. "His effort is to prevent another child from ever being another victim an he's doing whatever he can to make sure of that," said Smith.
- So what about the children and families of the ex-offenders you are shaming by doing this?

David Holland agrees with the effort and says the signs are necessary. "I have a 6-year-old granddaughter and there's a lot of this going on in our country, and we need to know who is and who is not," said Holland.
- So we should put up "MURDER," "GANG MEMBER," "DRUG DEALER/USER" signs for all other ex-felons, children are victimized by other felons as well!

Opponents to the signs fear possible retaliation from the people in the community. "I think he really believes that this is going to raise awareness, but I really think it's misguided," said Florida Action Committee's Gail Colletta.

Since April the Bradford County Sheriff's Office has put up 18 signs in front of sexual predator's homes, stating that the Florida statue allows them to alert the community of sexual predators by any means necessary.

"We feel, in Bradford County, that this is necessary," said Smith. "We have not had a single incident at this point where any of these predators have been marked by any type of vigilante. We will protect them with the law, but we will also protect our children."
