STAUNTON - A former Staunton cop who was granted bond last month in a pending sex case is back behind bars after violating a condition of his bond, court records show.
John C. Nuckolls, 55, is being held at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona.
Nuckolls, an ex-Staunton cop and one-time school resource officer, faces two charges of attempted indecent liberties with a minor and two charges of use of electronic means to solicit sex from a minor following his May 19 arrest.
On July 29 in Staunton Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, a judge gave Nuckolls a $10,000 secured bond. However, on Aug. 7 he violated a condition of his bond that stated he “not use the Internet or any electronic device capable of accessing the Internet,” court records state.
Authorities arrested Nuckolls the following day. On Tuesday, he was denied a second chance at bond in domestic relations court. A bond appeal will be heard Aug. 28 in Staunton Circuit Court.
In May, Staunton police arrested Nuckolls after he made plans to see a fictitious 14-year-old girl he met on the Internet, according to a police report.
Police said Nuckolls was in an Internet chat room when he made contact with a male police officer posing as the girl.
The online conversations between Nuckolls and the undercover officer were sexual in nature, police said.
Authorities arrested Nuckolls at a home on the city’s south side as he arrived to meet the teen, an earlier police report stated.
Nuckolls was an officer with the Staunton Police Department from 1982 until his retirement in June 2008. His last assignment was as a school resource officer at Robert E. Lee High School.
Nuckolls’ preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 26.
