Chris Hinton, Son Of Sex Offender: Father 'Went From Role Model To Worst Person'

Original Article
Watch the full interview here

02/22/2013

By Lindsay Wilkes-Edrington

Registered sex offenders are subjected to years of public embarrassment and scrutiny, but they aren't the only ones impacted by their crime. Their spouses and children suffer as well.

On HuffPost Live this week, Chris Hinton shared his story of discovering his father's secret and the impact it has had on his life. Hinton told HuffPost Live's Nancy Redd that the day he found out was "without a doubt" the worst day of his life. It all started with a phone call from his mother, who broke the news that his father was under investigation for molesting a child at the church where he served as part-time minister.

"With one phone call," Hinton said, "you have your father, your mentor, he was my minister at one point, my friend, role model, you have all that taken away."

Hinton's father pleaded guilty to eight counts of molestation and is now serving a 30-year minimum sentence in prison. Hinton told HuffPost Live that it has been 1 1/2 years since he first found out and that he's just now coming around to corresponding with his father occasionally through letters. Hinton says he also hopes to turn his family's tragedy into something positive by becoming an advocate for other families that are struggling to get their lives back together.

Spanish show on UniVision seeking a R&J case to feature on their show

This was posted on the SOSEN forums.

We have been contacted by a national media show from UniVision. This is a Spanish-speaking network and we have seen some awesome and supportive work come from this producer in the past. The show is the Spanish network's version of our 20/20 - an investigative show much like a documentary - which focuses on individual cases.

They are looking for a good story, preferably a Romeo & Juliet story. The producer told me that it is very common amongst the Spanish population for the male to be older than the female. She does not understand why the US views some of these offenses as felonies and she wants to show her audience how crazy the laws have become. She may consider focusing on another type of story as well - it depends on what we have to offer but a good Romeo & Juliet story is her preference right now.

The most difficult part - at least one person has be be able to speak Spanish.

WA - KIROTV reporter wants someone for an interview

The following was send to us via our contact form. If anybody is interested? The article she is talking about is here.

Hello.

I just saw your post about the murders of two sex offenders in Clallum County, WA. It mentions that some thought should be given to whether sex offender registration should be restricted to law enforcement. I am looking into a story about that. Is there anyone available from the blog who would be willing to do an on camera interview?

Thanks for your consideration,

Terry Brown Interview with FOX

You will notice in the video they show "40% of offenders re-offend," which is a lie and doesn't jive with true statistics, which puts the recidivism rate around 3.5% to 5.3%, and you can find many more studies at the bottom of this post.

ALERT: Human Rights Watch - Seeks Juvenile Case Examples for Research Project

Original Article

04/16/2012

Hello,

I would like to take a moment from my research to say “THANK YOU” to all that have participated and assisted with the Human rights Watch research thus far. With your assistance, I have conducted nearly 100 interviews of youth and their families in various parts of the country. You all have welcomed me in your homes and lives with open arms.

THANK YOU.

Many of you have suggested that I tailor my ‘search for interview bulletin’ to clarify that the report is focusing on the harm of registration laws on child registrants and their families. I took your suggestions to heart and revised the research description. Please feel free to circulate the REVISED RESEARCH PARAMETERS below and flyer far and wide.

Again, thank you for your amazing trust and making me feel like family. My travels will continue … I look forward to meeting many of you soon.

REVISED RESEARCH PARAMETERS

My name is Nicole Pittman. I have worked on reforming federal and state sex offender registration laws for nearly seven years. As an advocate and researcher for Human Rights Watch, I am currently conducting a nationwide investigation on the harmful impact of sex offender registration and notification laws on children. The published Human Rights Watch report will focus on documenting and advocating against the human rights violations that stem from placing children on sex offender registries.

Interviews will extend to but are not limited to persons who meet the following characteristics and categories:
  1. Children (under the age of 18) who have been adjudicated delinquent or convicted as an adult of a sex offense AND;
    • Subject (or subjected) to sex offender registration and notification laws.
    • Were subjected to registration or notification laws but successfully petitioned to get off the registry
    • Were subject to registration and notification laws but aged out of the juvenile justice system and no longer are required to register.
  2. Family Members affected by a child relative subject to registration and notification. Family members can also include siblings, cousins, grandparents, aunts/uncles, coaches, clergy, foster parents, teacher, principals, or anyone in a guardian/mentor-like position in the child’s life that was indirectly affected by the child’s registration status.
  3. Attorneys representing children in underlying criminal proceedings or adjudications.
  4. Government Officials A Government official in this case can be a probation officer, a judge, prosecutor, mandatory sex offender treatment provider, sex offender registration group treatment provider, police officer, interstate compact on juvenile official, etc.

I will be interviewing in various states during the spring/early summer 2012. Attached you will find a copy of the breath of the specific issues I would like to explore. Please feel free to contact me directly (email is best). pittman@hrw.org.

Human Rights Watch Project - The harmful impact of sex offender registration and notification laws on children

This was posted elsewhere, and Human Rights watch is looking for people to do interviews.

Searching for Interview Subjects:

I am conducting a nationwide investigation for Human Rights Watch on the harmful impact of sex offender registration and notification laws on children. This project will focus on documenting and advocating against the human rights violations that stem from subjecting children to such laws. Three general concerns are:

  1. First, the laws can be overbroad in scope and overlong in duration, requiring child offenders to register who pose no safety risk.
  2. Second, given the easy public access to online sex offender registries, registrants may be subjected to public humiliation, harassment, and violence. In certain cultural or religious communities, the registration requirements can harm a young person’s ability to practice their religion or enjoy their cultural rights.
  3. Third, residency restrictions can have the effect of banishing registrants from entire geographical areas, forcing them to live far from their homes and families. The risk of public humiliation, family separation, and de facto community banishment can be particularly harmful for youth, including by harming the mental health and developmental progress of youth. The subjects I am looking to interview include, but are not limited to, persons with information relevant to the concerns outlined above who meet the following characteristics and categories;
    • Children (under the age of 18) who have been adjudicated delinquent or convicted as an adult of a sex offense that either;
      • Subjects (or subjected them) to sex offender registration and notification laws. This can include residency restrictions, zoning restrictions, housing restrictions, etc.
      • Were subjected to registration or notification laws but successfully petitioned to get off the registry
      • Were subject to registration and notification laws but aged out of the juvenile justice system and no longer are required to register.
    • Family Members affected by a child relative subject to registration and notification. Family members can also include siblings, cousins, grandparents, aunts/uncles, coaches, clergy, foster parents, teacher, principals, or anyone in a guardian/mentor-like position in the child’s life that was indirectly affected by the child’s registration status.
    • Attorneys representing children in underlying criminal proceedings or adjudications.
    • Government Officials A Government official in this case can be a probation officer, a judge, prosecutor, mandatory sex offender treatment provider, sex offender registration group treatment provider, police officer, interstate compact on juvenile official, etc.

Interviews with a wide variety of people from the above categories is essential to the success of this investigation and publication of findings. Every interviewee will have the right to refuse participation and / or to provide information confidentially.

Please contact me by email or phone with the name and contact information of the potential interviewees. If the subject is homeless or does not have access to email or phone, please contact me so we can discuss alternate ways to reach out to them.

Is hypocrite Dr. Drew encouraging mothers to sexualize their children?

In a recent show, Dr. Drew had two other women on his show. One woman's husband was a part of the NAMBLA pedophile group, but the other women, Lynn Gilmore, her husband was not. He was convicted of a sexual crime. But, Dr. Drew splashes the "I MARRIED A PEDOPHILE" text on the screen.

Lynn's husband has NEVER been diagnosed as a pedophile, and Dr. Drew should know that, after all, he is a "doctor" who specializes in sex, is he not?

Dr. Drew's Interview With Lynn:

And now he goes on to have this show where he is basically encouraging parents to sexualize their children, IMO. That is true hypocrisy in my book.

Dr. Drew show seeking interview with wife of a sex offender!

This was posted elsewhere and figured others may want to try to get in on this?

The following email came through the support hotline:

To Whom It May Concern:

I’m a producer on Dr Drew Pinsky’s HLN show. We’ve been covering the Jerry Sandusky story closely and are continuing the conversation this Monday, Dec 12, regarding his wife, Dottie, and her decision to defend and stand by her husband. Since Dottie isn’t giving interviews at this time, we’d like to speak to a wife that has gone through a similar situation. We hope to give our viewer some insight as to what it’s like to go through something like this, having the public arrive at an opinion before the facts have been presented, etc.

I’d love to speak with someone from your organization if you feel you may be able to suggest a wife to share her first-hand experiences with Dr Drew. It’s the goal of our show to not only report the news, but also examine the motivation of people in the stories. Drew is a medical doctor, husband and father, and his interviews are always very professional and hopefully informative.

We’ll be taping this segment on Monday at 2:30p PST. I can be reached over the weekend at this email or either number below with any thoughts and/or questions. Thanks for any help!

Best,

Bill

MO - Fixing a broken list

Rep. David Day
Original Article

08/26/2011

Rolla - State Rep. David Day attended and spoke at St. Louis with a group of individuals that feel the current Sex Offender Registry laws are broken (See Here).

My purpose at the meeting was to visit with them about working with elected officials and lobbying them, something I have done with several groups in the state.

Last year we worked on a bill with Rep. Rodney Schad sponsored and I proudly supported, it was HB 999.

What last session’s HB 999 would have done is simply recognize the difference between a true sex offender and someone who makes a dumb mistake at a young age.

Last year HB 999 passed out of the House with only 16 “No” votes, but never received floor time in the Senate because of it being so late in session.

Our hope is to have it moving much quicker next session and try to fix a system that in my opinion is a broken one.

Feel free to contact me (573) 751-1446 or david.day@house.mo.gov.

IN - Sex Offenders Reveal 'Sick Secrets'

Original Article

See Also: Sex offenders share insights, harsh reality

Like usual, the media and others get the worse cases they can find, and lump all sex offenders into one group, and treat them all as if they are all monsters. The media, politicians, etc, need their monster, and sex offenders happen to be their scapegoat. See the video at the link above.

Convicted Predators Speak Frankly On Luring Young Victims

MUNCIE - A handful of convicted sex offenders spoke frankly to 100 strangers Wednesday night in Muncie, with no questions off limits.

The workshop was a first-of-its-kind event put on by the Family Services Society to prevent future abuse, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

As offenders spoke candidly about the crimes that put them in jail, two of the panelists said they assaulted young girls they had just met. One abused his own daughter and another was a church mentor.

The offenders talked about how they justified their actions in their minds.

"I moan and gripe and complain about the children that are wearing pants that's got "sexy" (written) on the back. Why do you want to put a word on your 12-, 14- or 16-year-old daughter's butt? I mean, is that not trying to draw attention to her?" said one sex offender, who met his teenage victim online. He blamed pornography for fueling his addiction to sex.
- He's the one responsible for his problem!

All of the panelists agreed that they thought only of their own gratification during their crimes, never about the effect on their victims. Parents came to the workshop looking for answers.
- Looking for answers?  Really?

"(I want) to see how these folks operate and get insight to see where I can stand to protect my own children," said Dwight Martin, a father of a 5-year-old.

"(I wanted) to make sure that I know what to look for to keep my kids safe," said Brandy Martin, Dwight's wife.

"I have three little children. I have a 4-year-old, a 1-year-old and a 3-month-old. That's my worst fear ever is that something awful like that could happen to them," said parent Sandrina Saintignon.
- Statistics show that most sexual abuse happens by someone the victim knows, so you might want to watch your family and anyone else who comes in contact with your child, not just some stranger on the street.
