HACKENSACK (CBSNewYork/AP) - A former Ramsey, N.J., police officer was acquitted of child sexual assault Monday, but was convicted of child endangerment.

Jeffrey Kimmel, 49, faces up to 10 years in prison following his conviction on Monday, according to a Record of Wooldland Park report. Kimmel was a patrol officer with the Ramsey Police Department.

During the trial, prosecutors said Kimmel fondled a 6-year-old girl in a relative’s home in 2010. But the defense claimed the girl’s “sketchy memory” meant Kimmel should be acquitted on both counts.

The girl, now 9, testified personally at trial that Kimmel called her into his bedroom and molested her in October 2010, the newspaper reported.

Kimmel was convicted of stealing more than $110,000 from his police union while he served as its treasurer. He received a six-year sentence but was freed on parole after serving seven months.

Authorities said his parole may be revoked due to the child endangerment conviction.

Sentencing for Kimmel is set for June 14, the newspaper reported.
