Why is OFFENDEX getting away with extortion?

Update: Offendex.com has now split into another site called SORARCHIVES.COM possibly due to this site: OFFENDEXTORTION.COM.

The Offendex web site scours the public sex offender records throughout the United States and collects the data in their own personal database. And even if a person is not listed publicly or has since been removed from the registry due to court order or because they are deceased, they still keep the information online, and in order to remove yourself or a loved one from their site, you must pay them a huge fee to get the record removed, and even then they admit, the record may or may not be removed.

So how are they getting away with extortion? Isn't that a crime in almost every state?

View their FAQ page here

NOTE: If you know of other sites who appear to be profiting from the sex offender hysteria by posting lies and/or disinformation, please contact us with all the needed information, or go here and fill out the formIf you have been removed from your states registry, then check the Offendex web site (link below) and see if you are on their web site.  If so, you should contact the state Attorney General, the police or a lawyer to see what you can do to get them to remove your personal information.

the answer, I believe, to the first question is simple:  they can get away with this extortionist vigilantism because the idiots who formed the registry and passed the laws the enacted the draconian penalties levied against SOs could not care less whether we live or die...
this is the nature of democracy these days:  your freedom is only secure until the laws of the land somehow intersect with your lifestyle.  Once this happens, the same institution that has the power to enforce your rights becomes the same power that will take it away...
Nobody is safe with our current government...  Nobody!

I suppose one blessing of the site is that the names are out of order and are not listed by city/county...
Unless somebody has absolutely no life and wants to spend several days working though the list, it's unlikely this is at all dangerous...
the bonehead the created the site is just hoping for the occasional SO that wants to have his name removed or the sheeple that think information is power.  There's also all the "victims" out there that think they need yet another forum to air their grievances...
The question does remain, however, as to why the respective states don't or won't enforce their own laws against harrassment.  I guess it goes back to an article read recently where it was argued that laws, etc. are not considered punitive unless that was there intent.  Collateral damage be damned...
Since their intent is purported to be in the public interest, nobody will lift a finger against them...
So much for "we the people..."

I seem to keep coming up with new thoughts on this issue...
Recently I've been receiving calls every few months from somebody claiming to be from my local sheriff's office...
He is complaining that I'm never home for a residency check...
this is patent bull and I told him so (although he seemed to be surprised that I worked during the day.  I guess the idea that cops are intelligent flies out the window on that one...)
Noting the prevalence of vigilantism in the U.S. these days, if he calls again, I'll simply decline to talk as I have no proof of who he is and where he is calling from...
Be warned!

Do you have caller id?  If so, write down the number, then Google it to see who the number is for.

 ""Why is OFF............"
Government service offices and government institutions allow this crap because it is good for job security.  It is like traditional medicine, if you get well they go out of business. So new symptoms are pandered.

it is no different with government offering to pretend to serve and protect but, by allowing dis-information to run rampant, by not enforcing laws on the books and generally promoting ill-will and encouraging sex offenders to be placed in harms way only makes for more busy work and a fat budgets resulting in fat pay checks at the end of the week.

Now that government is  into the ''sex offender'' business of .....save the children.....and so on, take a look at the political careers being made, the millions and millions of dollars spent on sex offender crime machine, not to mention the media hype and your basic BS that is generated from this entire industry.  And where is the bulk of the money being spent?  On new laws.

All these morons  coming out of the woodwork and dumping on sex offenders is just NOT  okay, but what the hell does one expect?

Who is out there on behalf of WHAT IS RIGHT doing the right thing?
There is, without count, very damn few.
This site, S.O.I's is doing their best, but it will take a huge amount  of to support this type of quality site, forming  a national coalition, having a few bucks to fight back on several fronts.

The very minor amount of legal court actions won is so miniscule it barely counts, except for the defendant, when it comes to any class action suit or national standing that puts real rights back into the sex offender issue.

And so, the outgrowth of a new ''cottage'' sex offender industry is born.  Not by capitalism but greed and hate. And it is booming,

And why?  Simple.  Because they can and there is NO one or group to push back.

If there was a strong, well funded group of intelligent persons who made the decision to put their foot down and get this gdf sex  offender issues delt with correctly......This whole entire sex offender issues would be put on a corrected and proper course in very short order.

Why should government at any level or the public have respect for sex offenders when they are not shown to have respect for themselves?

A National Coalition, dig deep and get it funded.  There is a Wall Street of wealth of information right here on this site to get started.

We have to stop bitching and start itiching, or this bad tempered dog will bite us all in the butt.

Best Regards

A very good thought except that the number comes up as "restricted"...
Because a call from my PO comes up the same (and my girlfriends' calling card), I haven't questioned it...
Still, if a calling card comes up as "restricted," then I guess it could be anybody...
The alternative is simply to call the sheriff's office and find out if they make calls of this nature...
Thanks!

You could also ask the person for their name, where they work, and the phone number of the place.  If they cannot answer any of those, then I'd say it's a load of BS!

NJ45143112 said...

thanks again!
I did ask the last time but forgot to write down the name.  If I'd done that, I could have checked with the department to see if the person existed...
My bad!
Still, it seems to me that it's simply safer to politely decline to talk to unidentified people (regardless of who they claim to be)...

On the article topic - why are they getting away with this and does anyone have experience dealing with them?

F.A. Leonetti said...

It is being allowed because it is an undeniable continuation of the sex offender ''punishment'' after prison and the lack of a committed resistance.
Next, it is good for government busy work, news media and  keeping the public stirred up.
Lastly  dealing with this inane attacks and laws ,is  like  dealing with the play ground bully. the  pushing will stop is when someone pushes back.
Until then, all this thuggery will continue my friend.

Well, here's another one I just ran across this morning:

It would seem that while I was reasonably anonymous until now, I'm now visible to the public eye thanks to Google and these glory hounds...

God Bless America! (although I can't imagine why...)

So basically we are screwed..even if for those of us who are lucky enough to eventually get off.  I'm to the point where I almost wish we could have something like how Australia was started.  Just give us a small portion of the country (ie the northwest or whatever) and let us take our families and have our own little country, and leave us alone.

By the way, I made the case to my PO that such a propagation and abuse of information could only make her job more difficult as it adds to my stress and could interfere with my life while I'm under her supervision.
To me, that is a rational argument. To her, it sounded like whining...
Her response, not surprisingly, was: "Well, at least now you know how your "VICTIMS" feel..."
An interesting statement since the court documents are clear that there were "no" victims!
What a B&^%$!!

It seems someone else who is not a registered sex offender has also been attacked due to this sites old and outdated information.

https://www.lawguru.com/answers/question/show/PnF5BhjNMz

"I just moved to a new house. Shortly after moving in, I found out that a
previous tenant had been a registered sex offender with his address
(now my address) listed. Although the state sex offender registry
rightfully has delisted my address, it is still listed on private
Internet registries who have not responded to my request to remove my
address. One site, Offendex.com, even wants me to pay them 200 dollars,
otherwise they will NEVER take it off! I really don't have the money for
a lawyer to fight this, but I've had two windows broken and my car
key-scratched, as well as get late-night honks and shouts of "pervert!"
all the time, and I'm frankly scared for my family's safety. Local law
enforcement is powerless to do anything. What can I do?"

Anon said...

The problem is that when I google my name, it's coming up on offendex with all of the registry info (which is now officially removed). anyone who googles my name, finds this. It's just like being still on the registry really.

Google your full name in quotes on Google Images and be prepared for the shock of your life.

Extortionist

Makes money off of exploiting the sex offender registry for his own profit. Claims Offendex.com helps protect the public when in fact the only thing it does is cause confusion, disarray of sex offender listings and makes profit for his and Terry's wallets.

I'm starting a lawsuit against Offendex.com that may turn into a class action. Anyone willing to jump on board is welcome. My email is lrared@yahoo.com. Not worried about spam and public view at this point, you want in I will forward your info to my lawyer.

The only real way to get rid of these guys is to ignore them. A big lawsuit will only gain them attention. I would also be very careful visiting your profile on their site as I am sure any profile with multiple hits will end up on their front page.
Scum of the earth indeed. I would really like to know the founders and benefactors names. There has to be a very small group or maybe even just a single person who runs this- that is the person we need to know. I say this in a way that is non threatening manner but in a situation like this his cloak of anonymity should be nullified.

Seems all so strange unless this is just a serious coincedence that a business owner would do something like this...

Just incase this helps someone, a lot of people think that once they have finished jail/probation and are listed as a SO. there is nothing you can do like appeal the case or get a new trial. However, you can file a Writ of Habeus Corpus becasue being a sex offender is considered a form of restraint. So actually if you have a WINNABLE case you should seek habus corpus. when i was 19, my girlfriend pressed fake rape charges against me so i would get "out of her life". after 9 years i cleared my record and my name, i had completed probation at the time my charges were overturned. i got charged in 2001 and in 2008 i got let off probation early, in 2010 i got my case dismissed, and in 2011 i was off the sex offender registry. It doesnt matter if you are on offendex or those extortion sites, no one uses them. but if you REALLY DIDNT DO IT, you can prove it. If you are a child molester or a real rapist i guess you kind of deserve what you get, but if you were like me, and had a crazy person lie about you in order to ruin your life, there is hope. Get the best appeals lawyer in your area and do some research. i did more research on law than a lawyer would have, and i had at best a 1% shot of success, but i do not have a criminal record any more. so if you are on the SO registry, you still have hope. If you are only going to be on the registry for 10 years, i would try to win a writ before the 10 years is up, once you are off the registry, you no longer are ellligble for habus corpus. if you are on the registry for life, you can fight the charges till the day you die (or run out of money)

Those that develop sex offender registry websites that give misinformation under the colors of looking official could add in real fine print, "for entertainment purposes only" ... This will destroy the credibility of all the sites. If it is done under the prose of entertainment how can it be challenged? These BS sites may become the undoing of the Sex Offender Registry itself.
