CA - Banning sex offenders from online dating empowers predators

Video Description:
eHarmony, Match.com and Sparks, all online dating sites, just announced a California agreement to cross-reference members with the sex offender registry, based on a woman's allegations that she was victimized by someone she met through the site who had a previous sex crime conviction. The poorly-thought out plan, lauded by Attorney General Kamala Harris (Article, Facebook, YouTube), empowers predators and removes incentive for sex offenders to re-integrate healthily.

  2. My account on Jdate was actually just "suspended by an Administrator" the other day due to me being registered on the sex offender registry.  I find it ironic that I am now being persecuted and stereotyped by a website that caters to the persecuted and stereotyped.  I called their office and no one was able to give me an answer as to why I was terminated as I did not violate their terms of service according to their website.  They claim in their terms of use that they can suspend an account for no reason at all; however, there is a reason, and that reason is me being a registered sex offender.  I am curious to know what my lawyer friends say about that.  I would assume that anything against a sex offender would be considered legal because it is for "safety" or for "the kids" and that if just one person is saved, then it is all worth it.  Right?

It has been difficult enough to tell girls I start to date that I am a registered sex offender before feelings become developed, especially my own.  I have already been hurt twice.  But with all these restrictions and limitations being placed on functioning normally in society, what is my motivation in telling the truth?  Typically I have always treated people with respect, trust, and been completely honest.  I am that way because that is the kind of person I want to be and always have been.  But if I am met with anger, distrust, and belittlement, then there is no point and it fills my mind and body with hopelessness and despair.

Am I now seen as a dangerous criminal even though my crime did not involve rape, touching, or even solicitation?  Merely being a sex offender tells people that I am a rapist pedophile capable of horrible atrocities.

My crime was continuing a sexually charged conversation online with a minor even after I learned that the person was a minor.  I spoke to this girl for 30 minutes one time because I was bored at 2am.  It did not matter that I did not initiate the conversation, and it did
not matter that we both contributed to the nature of the conversation.  I took a plea deal at the recommendation of my attorney and was sentenced to 2 years of probation and have never seen the inside of a jail cell in my life.

I read the news often about sex offender issues and every month I am reminded of how my grandfather felt as he was sent to the concentration camps for merely being an outcast in Germany.

It is easy to ignore history repeating itself, but it is to a lesser extent... at least for now.

  3. Wow....your story is very compelling...especially wen you compare it to what your grandfather endured under similar notions many years ago.  I applaud you for sharing this on here, and I suggest you contact your local or state advocacy group (if any) and share this with them....and possibly your district's legislator if possible.  Good luck, and thank you again for sharing.

  6.  Why check only sex offender registries?  If they are going to do this, they should have all criminal records available, so they can check them and alert people to potential murderers, gang members, thieves, etc.
