CA - Does rehabilitation work for sex offenders?

Original Article

Like the expert says below, yes it does work, but it depends on the person, just like treatment for any other ailment.

BAKERSFIELD (KBAK/KBFX) — In the city of Bakersfield, there are currently 870 convicted sex offenders. And in Kern County, there are an additional 1,270. Their crimes range from statutory rape to rape by force. They are required to register with the state annually.

Although they have certain rules they have to abide by after release, they are part of our society. But some residents have differing opinions about a sex offender's place in society.

"If they could really, they are gonna be fine (in society), then I would give them one more shot," one resident said.

"(They can't be cured). It's a sickness," another resident said.
- And your stupidity is a sickness.

But psychologists who have worked with convicted sex offenders say treatment can work in most cases.
- You will notice, the title of this article, and they mention just above "sex offenders," but then immediately below, they go into pedophilia? Not all sex offenders are pedophiles, and this is a problem. When are the so-called "experts" going to stop putting all sex offenders into a "pedophile" basket? You are just helping spread fear, IMO!

"Pedophilia is a mental disorder. In some sex offenders it appears to be some biological variation that might play a role," mental health administrator Dr. Brad Cloud said.

When sex offenders seek treatment the success depends on the person.

"Treatment works for a great many people. But it doesn't always work. There are people who don't respond well to it, or there are people who respond well to it and then re-offend later," Cloud said.

And the statistics for re-offense also depends on the type of crime and the circumstances.

"(There is a) four to ten percent recidivism rate for incest offenders. Rapists are a bit higher at seven to 35 percent recidivism rate. The highest rate of recidivism is those who molest boys and that rate is at 13 to 40 percent," Cloud said.
- This all depends on the studies you read.  Overall, the most studies put the recidivism rate in general, under 10%.

But it also depends on what type of treatment they receive.

"Some of them have been shown to have a meaningful reduction effect to some studies and not to others," Cloud said.

  1.   This is exactly how the term Sex Offender becomes translated or synonymous with the term Pedophile by the public. Joe plumber watches this interview assuming he knows what question they were asking the people on the street and the expert; But the only person who knows is the terrorist behind this piece. There's no integrity to an article that's been spliced together like this.
Psychology is not a science. Each psych has a differing opinion based on their own personal experiences and theories in dealing with patients. We're brought up to believe that we are individuals and unique (According to Mr. Rogers). Psychs are the ones who categorize us into populaces of  mental ailments. Many people feel these experts words are the gospel and that somehow can be cured by channeling their demons to expel them through therapy. Exorcism by prescribed medication through/with these professionals is also popular. I think they're just a over priced shoulder to cry on. I don't believe their testimonies should be admissible in court either as it's usually just a judgement of character swayed by the defense or prosecution depending on who's paying the bill.

  2. I don't mean any disrespect but as you have tried to show the misconceptions of what a sex offender is I feel I must correct you on "Psychology is not a science". The word science is often misunderstood to be an in reference to things that are know to be absolute. Science, The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic
study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world
through observation and experiment. Thus a term of "absolute science" would be an oxymoron. So as you point out psychology is not absolute it then must be a science.

Example. We know that a circle is the best shape to use for a wheel. To figure this out we used science. Now that it is known what shape to use it is no longer a science but is now an absolute or a "matter of fact".

The point that you are trying to make is valid though. Johnny Public is making a "matter of fact" from a single statement without the use of any science. This would be the same as saying that all solar systems with planets have at least one planet with life on it based on the fact that there is life in our solar system.

I like to think that we use 20% of our brains for intelligence and use 80% for stupidity. And for 80% of the population, 80% of the time they use the stupid portion. So what you get is a few times each day they say something intelligent immediately followed by a bunch of stupid.

Sorry for the correction its just that science is my favorite study.

  3.    Sorry I stepped on your toes S.D., You're correct in that what I meant was it's not an exact science.

  4. An interesting conversation since I've always felt that psychology was composed of a bunch of eggheads that have little concern for people as individuals.  Statistics and subjective reasoning seem to dominate the field.
Indeed, the ABEL test and others the supposedly demonstrate sexual deviance are highly biased.  Perhaps not so much the test itself but the interpretation of the data...
I would also agree with DeathKlok that psychology is neither an exact science nor an absolute science.  Being basically human themselves, as noted above, determinations, tests and treatment are all basically subjective and may completely miss the mark...
Psychiatrists can be the worst of the lot because they can prescribe drugs.  Once you are on them, you're stuck...
Frankly, give me a dog and a bottle of tequila and I can get more done than wasting my time with these people...

    In my opinion, of course...
