Suspended Mazomanie attorney James Winch, whose computer was seized in an earlier search warrant raid at his home and office, was charged Thursday with four counts of possession of child pornography but could face more charges.
Dane County law enforcement officials executed a search warrant after being tipped off by police in Ohio who had been conducting an undercover child pornography sting operation that Winch may have downloaded child porn on his computer.
In court Thursday Winch was charged with four counts of possession of child pornography but Assistant District Attorney Mike Verveer said Winch is likely to face more charges when an examination of his computer is completed.
Prosecution of the case is being handled by the Rock County District Attorneys Office because of the many contacts Winch has had with the Dane County District Attorney's Office during his years as a lawyer here, which may lead to the appearance of a conflict of interest. Winch has practiced law here since 1981, but his license to practice was suspended by the State Supreme court earlier this year after the high court found he had violated the rules of practice by using clients' money.
